The way Higan pulls Sakura toward the 'other shore' with every life it takes isn't just a plain curse, I think — the blade is slowly trying to replace her with itself. Kage might actually be a former heir, too.

For three days she did not touch the blade. She only watched it from a distance — the thin red veins that wound across the black steel as if they were her own blood.
On the fourth night, she heard that the men who had burned the village had returned. Without thinking, she snatched up the bundle. The moment her hand closed around the hilt, a whisper rose in her ear — soft, familiar, and terrifying: 'At last. How long I have waited for you.'
When the blade left its sheath, the air changed. For an instant, Sakura's eyes flared blood-red. That night she killed for the first time, and worse still, she had never felt so alive as she did while doing it.

Thanks for the comments! Hint: the number of blossoms on the hilt is no coincidence 🌸
The cherry-blossom motif recurs in every chapter; the author's pacing is excellent. The action scenes are crisp, too.
